Turing Pi's shaking things up with their new RK1. It's 5x faster than the Pi CM4.
But is it worth the price? Dive into my test results, then we'll rack up two SBC clusters: 6 Pi CM4s on the DeskPi Super6c cluster board, and 4 Turing Pi RK1s in the Turing Pi 2.

Corporate Open Source is Dead

Nobody likes being rugpulled. But lately, it's going around like a virus. Why are so many former open source darlings selling out or relicensing? We will see how that new trend turns out... I could imagine, that the closed source versions get irrelevant fast, because the majority of key developers work with companies that use those projects, not the once that bought and close sourced them. In consequence the forks would become the new standards, while the closed versions would go stale rather quickly. The business clowns that make such decisions never factor in risks like that, let alone what it would cost them, to actually hire the necessary developers and to stay on top of things.

My biggest problem with corporate open source has nothing to do with the licenses. Rather, traditional open source projects are guided for the public's benefit, rather than for a business benefit. Those two goals conflict with each other quite often. Ever seen a feature that would be really nice to have locked behind a paid license? Yeah, that's what happens in corporate open source. Traditional projects tend to be much more open to community involvement, at all levels: from accepting code contributions without agreeing to a CoC (that binds your activity even outside of the project) and a CLA and this and that; to keeping the code documented and readable for others to be able to contribute to; to ensuring you can run it yourself instead of heavily documenting the SaaS version and under-documenting the self-hosted version; to providing - and staffing - community support channels instead of requiring a paid support license even for basic questions that will then be answered by an outsourced rep who knows less about the product than the customer does... Yeah. The license barely matters compared to the differing styles of development.

but you have to think, for security review only, no code contribution, how many people really want to look at the code? Prime example, when I tried Codium.... it kinda sucked. I'm a Fedora user (also an arch user btw), but it's not hard to turn off the telemetry. Open source is essential for the linux distro base, but not everything. With closed source, we just kinda have to pray the CVE is exposed and solved. Lack of input, that really sucks because I like to offer up ideas, or a feature that is clunky.

I get what y’all are saying, and I’m definitely a freeloader myself, but the question is: How can a company survive if their main offer is a free product? I’m really confused by all of this because to me support/hosting doesn’t seem to be a viable business (I would not engage with a third party OSS provider specifically for their software unless I have a very niche edge case). Can y’all explain to me how an OSS centered company can make ends meet?

This has been happening for at least a decade. Odoo was probably the first prime example of that happening and the canary in the coalmine. After they proved you can ditch opensource and jump off the backs of others' hard work, everyone else followed suit.

I remember when data rates went from 110 baud to 300 baud. That speed increase was amazing for the time. And years later the first 14,400 baud modem came to market at $14,400 each. These young folks think 1Gbps is slow. They do not know what slow is. It did teach us patience.

There is no amount or order of putting the PCIE commands in that will change anything. This is stressing me out. 4 hours of trying to do this. Nothing. I don’t even want to boot off of it anymore. I don't understand why you and other people are saying that CLAs have anything to do with "rugpulling". If code is licensed under MIT, Apache, or similar, which is commonplace, then it is perfectly within anyone's rights to take that code and work on a proprietary fork of it. That's all these companies are doing, and they can do it with or without a CLA. There is no such thing as "relicensing" per se -- all you can do is change the license under which subsequent changes are made. If a codebase is GPL and has a CLA, then you should treat it as if the company has an MIT or Apache license to the code. It's entitled to say that a company that releases code as open source is obligated to give continued support and development in perpetuity. If the community wants the code to continue to be developed, they will fork it, and that is the system working as designed.

If you're a product dev, remember to build pluggable stacks to minimise the overhead of the eventual forced switch. You don't build a "Redis" layer, you build a generic caching layer and then have a redis implementation of it. If and when Redis slays the golden goose, all your code points to the generic API - so it's much simpler to switch to what makes sense at the time, get all your integration tests to pass and on you go. I'm hearing lots of tight-coupling pain that's pretty avoidable but in the industry it's common to "move fast and break stuff" - us devs never learn 😂
